After recently “topping off” the construction site for the $548 million, 460,000 square foot New Hospital Building… the giant crane used during construction was disassembled and trucked away this weekend. The building is set to open in 2010 and has been under construction for about 3 years already.
Lan and I were asked to come to the construction site to take photos and shoot some video while the crane was disassembled.?? After recent crane tragedies and scandals, it was great to see that this one was safely disassembled and transported away without a hitch.?? We shot the video in time lapse… my favorite part is when the clouds roll through towards the end… I think we might see more time lapse videos from The Bui Brothers… coming soon in HD.
It really was quite a sight to behold… especially from the awesome vantage point atop an adjacent CHLA building… from the helipad.

We actually learned a few things about the crane and its operation… some things we were curious about (nope, there’s no restroom, just a bucket!)… and some things we hadn’t even thought to ask (the crane is built where an elevator shaft will be… so it is able to work from the middle of the building then be removed without affecting what can be built since the elevator won’t even be put in for 6 months or more).
See Lan’s blog for some shots from the day… when he posts them.

Awesome. I want to an overnight time lapse out of my window, I’m on the 21st floor. I’m afraid it may only be cloud movement. But I want to do some interesting things with time lapse but I want it to be different and something unique if possible.
That’s so cool. Did you guys get to wear the cool hats and harness? Now that was special!
What a fascinating minute! It’s comforting that people know what they’re doing and do it well. I am also impressed with the smoglessness (for LA) of the day you recorded. Awesome!
Look great guys.
How did you capture the TL footage? Did you shoot a butt load of video and speed it up, or did you use stills? If you used stills did you shoot them manually or with an intervalometer? Was it pretty easy to set up?
cheers
adam
Awesome!! So was that another crane that was helping tear down that crane? And my question would be, who tears THAT one??? Does it ever end? LOL!

hey isn’t your birthday today??? if it is Happy Birthday, if not Happy Birthday anyway:)
Happy Birthday to you!!! Hope you had a great one!
You guys continue to amaze, impress, and inspire me. And you created the music too?!? You’re WAY too talented.
Miss hanging with you!
Unfortunately (or fortunately, since it was sooooo hot!) we didn’t get to wear the hardhats or harnesses… we were escorted up to the top of the adjacent building and that’s the only access we had. It would have been great to get into the construction site… maybe next time!
Actually, Adam, we used a Sony VX2100 camcorder which has a built in time lapse feature. I had it capture 0.5 seconds of footage for every 30 seconds… it ended up shooting a little more than a minute per hour. Then we sped it up considerably to get the final 1:20 or so, made some music in Garage Band, and voila!
The next project will be shot with a DSLR and an intervalometer… and will be distributed in HD.
Thanks for the details. The next project sounds great. I saw a great presentation by Jim Tierny of Digital Anarchy at an MGLA meeting a while back where he did some incredible time lapse photography using a DSLR and an intervalometer. Not sure which model he used but if I recall it was about $180 from B&H
Be interesting to hear what you end up using and how it all turns out. I’m standing by :)
cheers
