Work is going quite well. One of the cool things about working in a company like mine is that you get to work with people who share some similar interests, like mountain biking. Mountain biking is so popular that there are two storage rooms dedicated to employees’ bikes, and when you walk around the offices you see bikes in peoples’ offices and cubicles all over the place. It doesn’t hurt that we’re also right next to some great trails, and that the loop through Whiting Ranch is right there and takes most of these guys less than 45 minutes. I’m pretty sure it’ll be a while before I can do it that fast, but once I can, my lunches will be filled with biking. 45 minute ride then 10 minute shower, perfect.

Photography, unsurprisingly, has been on the sidelines for the past few weeks. This job is a big deal, and right now I’m not quite used to my schedule so I’m tired all the time. I’m not used to any schedule at all, in fact, since I haven’t had a “real” job for 16 months or so. Now getting up at 3:30am to get to work at 5am is not going over too well. It’s ok though, I’m sure I’ll get used to it just like anyone else.

I wonder if people from work will ever find this site and read my journals. I guess that would be rather strange, possibly even awkward. It’s not like I try to be the bigserious boss man, but I still think it would be weird for my employees to read what I write here. Oh well. I guess we’ll see what happens. Luckily I don’t plan on writing much about work in here, it’s just that this week it’s the big thing in my life, so what else is there to write about?

Haven’t really been writing much lately, largely due to the fact that I haven’t been doing much to write about. When I get my Rockhopper I’l be riding again, and when I get a good camera bag of some sort for the bike I’ll be taking more photos… but for now, things are dead. I’ll be stopping by the bike shop to check the status of my bike order in a few hours, so that’s something to look forward to. I’ll also (hopefully) be going shooting in the desert in the next couple of weeks, so there’s something else to look forward to. I guess it is expected there will be a lull in action sometimes.

Nope, no 2004 Rockhopper Comp for me… it won’t be available for another month. I will have to take the 2003, which is actually fine with me. The only downsides are the pedals and the fork, which will need a conversion kit to be 100mm. I can live with that. With any luck it will come in on Friday, so I may be able to ride Aliso with Josh.

New bike is on its way! I went in to Orange Cycle and they made the mistake of telling me they’d give me $250 on trade in for the $270 bike I bought from them 3 weeks ago. I went ahead and traded it in for a new Specialized Rockhopper A1 Comp. They might be able to get me an ‘04, but the ‘03 would be just fine with me. I’ll know tomorrow when they try to order it. The ‘04 has a better fork, but the ‘03 has disc hubs. It doesn’t matter to me, though. I’m just happy to get a much better bike with much better components. It’s a lot lighter, too. Unfortunately I have to wait for the thing to ship, so I won’t be biking for the next week or so. Can’t wait to get it…

Whiting Ranch was on the menu today, though it was a little different from the ride we did last time. This time, instead of turning left down Cactus Hill Trail (?) we went straight, which took us down a fast fireroad and into the rollercoaster trails that dump you out to Portola. Going this way had us miss all the dangerous and very fun singletrack that we experienced last time. It was ok though, a quick 50 minute ride. It was just nice to be back on the bike after 8 days of rest.

This weekend is the Oakley sale. Hopefully Fabian will be getting me tickets and I’ll be able to pick up a new pair of shoes, some riding glasses and a pair of those new Assault Boots. I’m doubtful about the boots, though, because they are brand new… they may not have them, or if they do it may be in a very small quantity, and I may not have a chance at a pair. Oh well, it’ll be nice no matter what I get. Oakley gear is awesome.

I took the Bessa-L with 15mm Heliar riding today. It’s smaller and lighter than the G3, but I guess that doesn’t matter. I took a few shots with it, I think they will be fun to see. I have only shot maybe 2 rolls with that lens, it’s time to put it to work. I know I won’t be developing much black and white any time soon, so I bought a few rolls of Superia Xtra 800 just to burn though. I’ll figure out what I want to shoot in it soon. Too bad I sold the Canon FS4000 US, but I needed the dough. Lan’s Epson 2450 should do the job for web display.

Paintball was awesome. Killing is fun. Must… kill… again!!! It took me a game or two to get in the groove, but then I started racking up the kills. Actually, my team was racking up the kills. The six of us (Tony, Lan, Kevin, Jarr, Chris and myself) were whooping some ass. The guys on the other team kept trying to break us up, but we came to play and kill together, not fight each other, so we stayed a team, and it was fun up until lunch. Then, the cheating started, and it wasn’t the same. It was ok, though, because we had already put in 8 great games and had only lost 1. They kept switching out our teammates but it didn’t matter, we played well together and advanced quickly through them each time. They started camping, but we still killed them. After lunch, though, a few of them because invincible, and apparently immune to being shot. There were times when we could clearly see they had been shot, and times that we just suspected, but in both cases they claimed to still be alive. I suppose it was their inner felines dishing out those extra lives or something. I got very upset during the last few games though, and the last two just weren’t fun at all, after one of their guys lit up Chris with about 10 shots (8 of them entirely unnecessary since the first two broke on him and he wasn’t shooting). The last game I just crawled around with Jarr because I didn’t have any paint left, I just shot blanks and stayed with him for moral support, until he died… oh well. It was still an awesome day, and I will definitely be going back soon, just not with the same people. The six of us can probably round up enough other guys to get our own private game, and then the killing will start again.

It’s a shame that I’m too sore to go biking tomorrow. Kneeling, crawling, crouching, etc… were a little hard on me, and I think it’ll take a little while to recover. My sides and back hurt the most, probably from the crawling on my belly through Korea and Russia. My quads aren’t doing too well either, and that would probably be from the constant crouching. Like I said, though, it was worth it.

I put up a new bio pic, it’s an old shot Lan took of me shooting an event at The Block of Orange. That was when I was shooting with the Canon EOS 1v and one of my L series lenses, probably the 28-70mm 2.8L. It was a great camera, and it really gave me a feeling I’ve never felt as strongly with any other camera I’ve used… I think the best way to describe it is “confidence”. It was fast to focus, fast to wind, and had an amazingly responsive shutter. I could see what I was focusing on, I could see 100% of what was to be in the frame, and I could see all the exposure and other information I needed through the nice bright viewfinder. I could manually adjust setting or leave it in dummy mode. And I always could feel when I pressed the shutter that I had gotten the shot. The only downsides were its size and the noise. They never bothered me too much until I started reading all the raves about the M6, though. I really missed the speed and responsiveness. Nothing else has compared. I know the M6 had a fast shutter, but I could ever focus it as fast as my L lenses focused. I also could set exposure as quickly. Yep, I really miss my 1v. I wish I had never sold it, because I’d still have all my L series lenses and if I couldn’t afford to shoot film right now I could sell just the body and get a 10D, I’d still have all that wonderful glass. OH WELL. I’ll just have to wait.

The M6, Summicron and Minilux all sold really quickly, and at very decent prices. Next week I’m going to try and sell Ben’s Contax gear. I don’t know if I can get the money he wants and still get a cut for myself, but I’m going to try. Gotta make some money somehow.

Paintball is on the menu for this weekend. It’s a private game I was invited to at SC Village with the employees of Honda up in Torrance. I plan on killing lots of people. I just need to get my gun working properly, it seems to have a problem. I guess I need to try and fix it.

Lan and I rode “The Ironman” trail today, and found that this route really does live up to its name. I didn’t know it was called “The Ironman” until I got home and looked up the route we rode in the “Mountain Biking Orange County” book. Basically it was our regular Santiago - Chutes ride, with an added 6 miles or so through Weir Canyon. This way you actually get to ride through all 3 regional parks… Irvine, Santiago Oaks, and Weir Canyon. The Weir Canyon loop is basically a nice up and down twisty turny ride through some hills. There are no really long climbs, just shorter but very steep ones. Instead of riding just the 3 b’s, we rode the 30 b’s. The views were great, though, and they really made me wish that I had a good place for my camera that I no longer take along on rides.

I learned today that it is probably wise to bring along an extra Cliff bar and maybe an apple or something in the Camelbak. I was extremely hungry at about the 10 mile mark, and I started feeling very weak. I needed more energy. Next time I will be more prepared. I also really need a nice multi-tool. My bike needed adjustments and there wasn’t a damn thing I could do about it.
